Jobs and employment prospects for ASEAN 2015 to be discussed by high level panel

(ILO News) BANGKOK - The impact of the 2015 ASEAN community on jobs and employment will be discussed at a high level consultation in Bangkok next week.

The workshop, on “ASEAN Community 2015: Managing integration for better jobs and shared prosperity” will look at the impact on the region’s labour markets and how the opportunities of regional integration can be managed to ensure inclusive growth and shared prosperity. The conference is jointly organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB)
The introduction of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015 will lead to free flow of goods, services, investment capital and skilled labour in an area that encompasses 600 million people and 10 member states.

The highlight of the two-day meeting will be a high-level panel on Tuesday 5 November, which is open to the media. The panel will look at “Opportunities and Challenges of Integration for Better Jobs and Social Progress”. Discussions are expected to cover the implications of deeper ASEAN integration and greater trade and investment flows on the labour market, including the role of skills in driving competitiveness, the links between productivity and wages and the social and economic opportunities of labour migration.

Members of the panel are expected to include Yoshiteru Uramoto, ILO Assistant Director-General and Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, H.E. Alicia Dela Rosa Bala, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN, Bindu N. Lohani, ADB Vice-President for Knowledge Management and Sustainable Development, Sulistri Afrileston, Deputy President of the Confederation of Indonesian Prosperity Trade Union, Sandra d’Amico, Vice President of the Cambodian Federation of Employers and Business Associations, and Arkhom Termpittayapaisith, Secretary General of the National Economic and Social Development Board of Thailand. The discussion will be moderated by Veronica Pedrosa, from Al Jazeera TV, who will also invite inputs from the floor of the conference.

The event is also expected to be attended by government representatives, academics, and employers’ and workers’ organisations from throughout ASEAN.

The 90-minute high level panel will take place from 13.30-15.00pm on Tuesday 5 November, at the Amari Watergate Hotel, 847 Petchburi Road, Bangkok 10400 (Tel: 02 653 9000). The two-day consultation workshop ends on Wednesday 6 November.
