Held each year on the 28th of April, the world day for safety and health at work focuses international attention on the need to prevent deaths, injuries and diseases caused by work. ILO Office for Afghanistan, in collaboration with United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), commemorated this day at the United Nations Operational Centre for Afghanistan (UNOCA) in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Mr. Jorge Goncalves, Chief of Mission Support UNAMA, thanked the ILO for the collaboration and underscored the importance of safety at the workplace. He urged concerted efforts to make the workplace safer and healthier.

Mr. Manzoor Khaliq, Country Representative of ILO in Afghanistan, gave an overview of the importance of Occupational Safety and Health. He added that “technology is advancing and recent developments are changing the world of work and accordingly the nature of work, but no jobs should take away our safety, health and wellbeing, or our lives. He further added that according to the latest report released by the ILO on this occasion: “7500 people die every day as a result of occupational accidents and work-related diseases, which has a major impact on workers and their families; mentally, physically and emotionally.”

The ILO works with governments, employers and workers organizations to help make the workplace healthier and safer. Since 1919, the ILO has adopted over 40 international labour standards on occupational safety and health. It is urgent to join global efforts by ratifying relevant ILO conventions, which provide minimum standards and the protection of workers from multiple risks.

Mr. Khaliq paid tributes to the workers who lost their lives at workplaces and called on government, workers, employers and international community to join the efforts to help make work healthier and safer for people everywhere. He closed the event with a note of thanks to UNAMA colleagues and especially Mr. Jorge Goncavles Chief of Mission Support and his team for their collaboration to organize the event.

UNAMA Fire Safety Unit gave a demonstration on Fire safety to the participants. This was followed by a short quiz to create awareness about safety at the workplace.
