Focus Group Meetings were conducted for Syrian children working on streets

ILO Office for Turkey currently carries out a “Situation Analysis for Syrian Children Working on Streets in Çankaya, Altındağ and Yenimahalle districts in Ankara” within the scope of “ILO Response to Syrian Influx in Turkey” project.

4 November 2015

The study is being carried out jointly with Hacettepe University, Children's Rights Research and Application Center and in association with Ankara Provincial Directorate of Family and Social Policies. The research aims to identify the demographic and socioeconomic status of children working on streets and their families; to explore the causes of working on streets, working and living conditions and problems deriving from working on streets; on the basis of these findings, to develop suggestions to relevant governmental institutions; and to contribute awareness about the issue in society.

Within the scope of the research, the focus group meetings were held in Ankara Provincial Directorate of Family and Social Policies on 1-2 October 2015. Representatives from Ankara Provincial Directorate of Migration Management, Ankara Provincial Directorate of Disaster and Emergency of Management Authority (AFAD), Metropolitan Municipality, Altındağ Municipality, Social Services Expert Association, Federation of Persons in Difficult Conditions, a representative from ILO Office for Turkey and a chief police officer from Children Brach Office attended to the focus group meetings under the supervision of Hacettepe University, Children Rights Research and Application and Ankara Provincial Directorate of Family and Social Policies .

During the meetings, the representatives shared their previous experiences and current activities on Syrian children working on streets and discussed the reasons of the issue. Meetings ended with open discussions on the ways of improving the mechanisms to eliminate child labour particularly among Syrian communities in Ankara; focusing on solutions and social policies.
The situation analysis is planned to finalize by mid December 2015 and the ILO would share the findings with wider audience and policy makers.
