There was a multi-stakeholder assessment meeting in Istanbul on 21-22 May 2015 related to the project "Elimination of Worst Forms of Child Labour in Seasonal Agriculture in Hazelnut Harvesting in Ordu Province” carried out jointly by the ILO and the General Directorate of Labour of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security (MoLSS).

At the meeting, governors and other authorities from respective provinces evaluated the present situation in the project which is currently being implemented in Ordu and envisaged to cover Düzce, Sakarya and Şanlıurfa provinces as well for the 2015 harvesting season and discussed possible activities to be carried out in the coming harvest.

Speaking at the meeting, Numan Özcan, Director of the ILO Office for Turkey, stressed that ILO-Turkey cooperation against child labour continues for over twenty years and important steps have been taken for the solution of the problem. Özcan said the meeting held with the participation of all stakeholders would be fruitful in giving a more concrete character to activities to be carried out in the 2015 harvesting season.

Participants also reviewed the activities conducted and outcomes achieved under the project in 2013 and 2014. Snezhi Bedalli, ILO-IPEC Officer for Europe, Central Asia and Arab Countries made a framework presentation on fundamental principles and forms of action in the context of child labour.

“There is an excellent work here together with lessons drawn so far. Maybe now it is time to go deeper into” said Bedalli, “The project implemented effectively may be carried further and it will be fruitful to share lessons drawn and experience gained not only with some other provinces in Turkey but also with the countries of Central Asia, Europe and even others.”

Hicret Bozoklu, Head of Employment Policies Division of the General Directorate of Labour in MoLSS drew attention to long-lasting cooperation between the Ministry and the ILO and stated that activities are going on effectively with the involvement of all parties.
