On 4th July 2019, the International Labour Organization (ILO) hosted the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) meeting. This was the first UNCT meeting the new United Nations Resident Co-ordinator, Coumba Mar Gadio, was attending since her appointment to Zambia.

In his welcome remarks, the ILO Country Office Director, Mr. George Okutho congratulated the new UN Resident Co-ordinator for ‘hitting the ground running’ after presenting her credentials to H.E the President of Zambia. He expressed, on behalf of other UN Agencies, their full support during her tenure and hope to fully benefit from her leadership.

Mr. Okutho informed the meeting that it was pleasing that ILO was hosting UNCT members at a time when a landmark new Convention No. 190 on ‘violence and harassment at work’ and the “Declaration on the Future of Work” were adopted by the 108th International Labour Conference, on 21st June 2019. Copies of these documents will be made available to UN agencies.

On the UN support work to Zambia, Mr. Okutho noted that engagement in the structures for the implementation and monitoring the 7th National Development Plan was key. In fact it is a “necessity and not a choice”, he said. These structures include the Cooperating Partners Group (CPG) and the High Level Dialogue as well as Clusters Advisory Groups (CAGs).
