Ethiopian Migrant Workers Association in Qatar revitalizes its capacity to support Ethiopian Migrant Workers

ILO and Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs partnered to build the capacity of Ethiopian Migrant Workers Association in Qatar.

ADDIS ABABA (ILO News) – The ILO in partnership with Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, organized a capacity building workshop for members of Ethiopian Migrant Workers Association in Doha, Qatar to improve their scope of support to Ethiopian migrants who live there.

The two-day workshop, which took place in May 26-27, 2016, addressed critical issues for migrant workers in their effort achieve their goals in their new environment including financial literacy and life skill.

Ambassador Dr. Desta W/Yohannes, Director General of Women's Affairs in Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during her inaugural speech also highlighted the need to build the capacity of migrant workers to better benefit from the opportunities they have as successfully manage their lives during overseas stay.

Ambassador Mesganu Arega on his part, gave assurance of a continued support by the Ethiopian consulate in Doha to the association as well as Ethiopian migrant workers in Qatar, especially in areas related to human rights of migrant workers.

The training workshop further provided a discussion forum on protection of the rights of Ethiopian migrant workers, understanding the required structure for ensuring that women migrant domestic workers (MDW) have access to health and legal services, social security and health insurance schemes; and finally improving services of diplomatic and consular missions to protect and ultimately assist migrant domestic workers in Qatar.
