    The AUC-ILO Forum, that hosted thirty AU’s member states from the different sub-regions in Africa, had as main objective to support the implementation of the African Union’s “Ten Year Action Plan to Eradicate Child Labour, Forced Labour, Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery (2020-2030)”, by promoting a continental multi-stakeholder dialogue on child labour elimination in supply chains.

    EAC moves to protect migrant workers from abuse

    Tthe East African Community (EAC) is pursuing the harmonisation of labour migration policies to curb exploitation and abuse of migrant workers. The initiative being spearheaded by the International Labour Organisation and the EAC secretariat is targeting to strengthen regional integration to safeguard the lives of those who seek greener pastures in key labour destination countries.

    Lesotho deposited the instruments of ratification of the Labour Relations (Public Service) Convention, 1978 (No. 151), the Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 2006 (No. 187) and the Violence and Harassment Convention, 2019 (No. 190).

    The International Labour Organisation (ILO) under the Accelerating Action for the Elimination of Child Labour in Supply Chains in Africa (ACCEL Africa) project, has completed the renovation of Oke Agunla Community School, Ondo State, and enrolled in school, a total of 110 children at risk of child labour in the community.

    The International Labour Organization (ILO) supported the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar through the OCGS to review and develop the administrative data collection tools; analyse the available surveys, including the Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey (TDHS), Household Budget Survey (HBS) and Integrated Labour Force Survey(ILFS) and develop metadata for the 117 of the localized SDGs indicators.

  13. Decent apprenticeship training for children of working age in Egypt

    Within the framework of supporting the promotion of the training and vocational progression to combat child labour as part of the “National Action Plan for Combating the Worst Forms of Child Labour in Egypt and Supporting Family (2018-2025)”, ACCEL Africa in partnership with the "Technical Support for the Comprehensive Technical Education Initiative with Egypt” (TCTI) Project implemented by GIZ Egypt successfully provided awareness training on decent apprenticeship for more than 500 apprentices of the dual education system in Beheira, Alexandira, Sharkia and Fayoum governorates.

  17. Good Practices: Knowledge Sharing for Partnerships on the Elimination of Child Labour in Supply Chains

    ACCEL Africa documented 14 good practices in the fight against child labour, which emerged from the ACCEL Africa project implementation in 6 countries: Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt, Malawi, Mali, Nigeria and Uganda.

    Hayat Osseiran, International Consultant, with the technical supervision of Angelica Munoz ILO M&E and Knowledge Sharing Officer, prepared the good practices collection. The ACCEL national teams and partners developed and shared technical information, inputs and visual materials.

  18. ILO urges East African countries to harmonise labour laws

    The ILO’s East African office gathered government and labour rights experts in Zanzibar to push for a common agenda on adopting labour standards as provided by the global workers’ organisation. And as countries in the neighbourhood work towards free movement of labour, the ILO says a common policy on migrant labour can help protect the workers as well as ensure only the needed labour is available.

  20. Due Diligence training to eliminate child labour in Uganda

    Through the training, participants were able to reflect on the specific challenges that they face and learned how to use different practical tools to implement in practice the different steps in a child labour due diligence process by which companies identify, prevent, manage and account for the negative impact occurring in their operations or value chains.
