    Despite strong evidence for cost-effective interventions, protection for women in maternity is often poorly prioritised in developing countries. Within this context Zambia is no exception. Zambia is characterised by widespread poverty, income inequality and poor health outcomes, especially with respect to maternal and newborn deaths. This report seeks to address the priorities reflected in Convention No. 183 regarding the protection of women in maternity that are vulnerable to both income poverty and inadequate access to health care in Zambia. It proposes costed scenarios for the introduction of a non-contributory maternity protection cash grant and maternal and infant health care package, as well as recommendations on implementation issues.

The study sought to characterize the working children, establish the types of work that children engage in, determine the pathways into and causes of child labour, as well as establish the living and working conditions, and perceptions of the community on child labour.

    Yetnebersh Nigussie is Executive Director of the Ethiopian Center for Disability and Development (ECDD) in Addis Ababa. Active in more than 20 volunteer groups dedicated to issues ranging from persons with disabilities to girls’ education to youth, she also chairs the Ethiopian National Association of the Blind Women’s Wing.She was recently appointed Goodwill Ambassador for 2013-14 by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management organizing committee of Ethiopia.

  1. Labour market transitions of young women and men in sub-Saharan Africa

    This report presents the results of the School-to-work transition surveys (SWTS) implemented in eight sub-Saharan African countries – Benin, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, the United Republic of Tanzania, Togo, Uganda and Zambia – in 2012 or 2013. Results show that unemployment of young people remains a matter of concern, but that issues relating to the quality of work available to young people are of even greater relevance to the design and implementation of policy interventions.

It introduces the steps in starting a business and results in a business plan for the proposed business venture. The SYB programme aims to contribute to the creation of viable small scale businesses by enabling potential entrepreneurs to carry out the steps to start their own businesses.

    In 2002, the 90th Session of The International Labour Conference concluded that growth of the informal economy could be traced to inappropriate, ineffective policies coupled with the lack of conducive legal and institutional frameworks and the lack of effective implementation of policies and laws; hence the need to find solutions in a “win-win” territory, where enterprise growth and workers’ protection converge. In realizing some of the objectives, the project devised a strategy of producing a simplified version of labour and labour-related laws.

    This report presents the achievements of the Decent Work Technical support team for West Africa and Country Office for Senegal, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Togo (DWT/CO-Dakar).The outcome of the activities presented in this report underscores the importance attached to priority areas in West African countries regarding the promotion of youth employment through enhancement of their employability, the development of entrepreneurship at urban and rural levels and a greater control of the informal economy, the promotion of sustainable employment and green jobs, a better management of HIV and AIDS in the world of work, the protection of women and gender equality in the world of work, and greater control of workplace indicators.
