Stakeholders Consultation Workshop on Promoting Employment in Nigeria

The Promoting Employment in Nigeria (PEN) Project is organising a Stakeholders’ Consultation Workshop on the 31st of May 2021. This inception workshop would provide an opportunity for national tripartite partners to deliberate on the project strategy and validate the draft work plan of the PEN Project. The objective of the PEN project is to strengthen the evidence-base on employment in Nigeria; employment governance frameworks; and institutional capacity for the transition to decent work. This one-day meeting is expected to foster project ownership and collaboration among national stakeholders towards the effective and efficient implementation of planned project activities.

Background
Employment promotion remains a policy priority in Nigeria. While high levels of unemployment, in particular among young people, and other decent work challenges were present before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the crisis has affected the socio-economic and labour market outlook and calls for urgent action on understanding its impact and strengthening the capacity of key stakeholders to respond to it.

With support from GIZ, the ILO is implementiong the Promoting Employment in Nigeria ‘PEN’ Project that intends to support the evidence-base on the current state of play of employment in Nigeria; employment governance frameworks; and institutional capacity for the transition to decent work in lose collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and other relevant stakeholders. Among others, the collaboration seeks to review the employment situation in Nigeria including with regard to the impact of COVID-19; support institutional capacity for the provision of labour market information and services; promote engagement around the 2017 National Employment Policy; and facilitate multi-stakeholder collaboration on employment promotion in Nigeria.

Sequel to the above, the PEN project wishes to convene a Stakeholder Consultation Workshop to deliberate on the project strategy, discuss planned activities, validate the project work plan and kick off implementation. This one-day meeting is expected to foster project ownership and collaboration among national stakeholders towards accelerated implementation of planned project activities.

Objectives
1. Present the PEN Project to tripartite stakeholders and validate the project work
plan;
2. Kick off project implementation.

Participants
The workshop would bring together representatives of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress Nigeria (TUC), ILO and GIZ.
