ILO Assists Nigeria on updating the National Occupational Classification

The International Labour Organization (ILO) assessed the current state of the National Occupational Classification (NOC) in Nigeria and made recommendations for its comprehensive review, the development of National Occupational Standards, Quality Assurance Instruments and a Monitoring and Evaluation Mechanism as well as Institutional Capacity Building.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) assessed the current state of the National Occupational Classification(NOC) in Nigeria and made recommendations for its comprehensive review, the development of National Occupational Standards, Quality Assurance Instruments and a Monitoring and Evaluation Mechanism as well as Institutional Capacity Building.

During the process, the ILO met with all key stakeholders including policy makers, implementers and users of NOC both in the public and private sectors.them to challenge gender inequality and discrimination.

TThe Ministry of Youth Development in Nigeria, the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and the National Board for Technical education (NBTE) requested the ILO to assist in updating and standardizing Nigeria’s National Occupational Classification (NOC) in the light of the present technological development. These requests were consolidated by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity when, in June 2011, when it made a formal request to the ILO to assist Nigeria in this respect.

The National Occupational Classification is drawn from the ILO’s International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO). The ISCO aims at facilitating international communication about occupations by supplying national statisticians with a tool to make national occupational data available internationally.
