One-Day Study Visit to Export Companies in Agro-Processing Value Chain

As part of the activities of the 4-day event, participants visited two processing factories; the Yam Pack house and Niche Cocoa Processing Company Limited. This was to enable the participants to observe and learn at first hand the employment situation in the sector so that findings and recommendations of the studies can be understood as part of reality.

Participants were greatly impressed with the outcomes of the training. The practical experience at the Yam Pack House and Niche Cocoa Processing Industry illustrate the empirical evidence of how such agro-processing companies have potential to be used as vehicles to create and upgrade employment especially in agrarian economy. It was recommended that the ILO should assist the sector ministries to develop models to facilitate the linking of government investments to employment generation in the country and as well, a study should be conducted to assess how the value chain of agro processing firms could be used to create and upgrade employment as it had great potential. The parameters for Decent Work should be reviewed to take into account the cultural settings of local communities.
