Export Processing Zones
Trade Union Manual on Export Processing Zones
The conclusions of the workshop on organizing in export processing zones (EPZs) organized jointly by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and the ILO Bureau for Workers’ Activities (ACTRAV) in February 2011 ended with 2 key challenges. Firstly, engaging in the policy debate with governments on EPZ policy. Secondly, organizing workers. The manual responds to these two challenges.
The expansion of Export Processing Zones across the world has posed the challenge of reversing the race to the bottom with regards to the respect of ILO standards in the Zones. This manual seeks to assist trade union leaders, activists and trainers, to: understand the facts and figures on EPZs; analyse working conditions in EPZs in the light of the ILO’s Decent Work agenda; sharpen their arguments when engaging with decision-makers on EPZ policy and learn from the experiences of others when developing their own organizing strategies.
