Port Said (ACTRAV INFO) – A bipartite agreement on strengthening social dialogue in the free zone of Port Said (Egypt) has been signed by the Egyptian Democratic Labour Congress (EDLC) and the Port Said Investors’ Association.

Thanks to support from the ILO Cairo Office, the agreement is in line with the Conventions ratified by Egypt, particularly Conventions N° 87 on freedom of association and protection of the right to organize and N° 98 on the right to organize and collective bargaining.

The bipartite agreement is an important step in facilitating respect for freedom of association in this region of Egypt, said Mohamed Trabelsi from the Bureau for Workers’ Activities (ILO-ACTRAV).“The agreement is a major gain for the workers and independent trade unions,” he stated. “All the more so as it covers a zone where workers did not have the possibility of organizing in trade unions.” Mohamed Trabelsi is Senior Specialist in Workers’ Activities.

The agreement was signed on Wednesday in the presence of the Egyptian Minister of Labour and Immigration, Nahed Ali Ashri, and the Director of the ILO Cairo Office, Yousef Qaryouti.
