Kyoto, 7 December 2011 (ACTRAV INFO) - The General Secretary of the Fiji Public Service Association, Rajeshwar Singh welcomed the resolution adopted by the 15th Asia Pacific Regional Meeting on the situation of workers in Fiji.

According to Mr. Singh, the resolution, initiated by the Workers’ group of the ILO’s Governing Body, is a strong message for his country.

"The resolution of the Workers’ group adopted during the Meeting is a strong message for us. I think that the Workers’ group has expressed its solidarity for the unions in Fiji. I am happy to find that the resolution has been adopted by the tripartite constituents of the governments, employers, and workers", explained Mr. Singh.

Note that during the 312th Session of the ILO Governing Body in November 2011, the Workers’ group condemned "the actions of the Fiji Government” against unions and workers in the country. In this resolution, the Workers’ group requested the ILO’s Director-General, Mr. Juan Somavia to:

“1-Closely monitor the situation in Fiji, and to intervene to safeguard the human and labour rights of Fijian Workers;

2-Ensure that the recommendations of the ILO Committee on Freedom of Association are fully implemented, in particular; “(j) Given the seriousness of the complainants’ allegations and the absence of a complete picture of the situation on the ground, the Committee urges the Government to accept a direct contacts mission to the country in order to clarify the facts and assist the Government in findings, together with the social partners, appropriate solutions in conformity with freedom of association principle.

3-Urgently inform the UN Secretary General and all heads of UN agencies regarding the grave and worsening trade union and human rights situation in Fiji and call on them to take these matters into consideration in their engagement with Fiji; including the suspension of cooperation if the situation in Fiji remains same.”
