Colombo: Sub Regional Seminar on Strengthening Union Capacity in order to Achieve Decent Work

Press release | Colombo | 19 October 2011

Colombo, 19 October 2011 (ACTRAV INFO)-From 18 to 19 October 2011, the ILO’s Bureau for Workers’ Activities (ACTRAV) organized a Sub Regional Seminar in Colombo on Strengthening Union Capacity in order to Achieve Decent Work.

Twenty five participants from Nepal, India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka exchanged their experiences during this seminar, the main objective of which was to build union solidarity in the region.

“All of these countries have a problem with a proliferation of trade unions at national level”, explained Mr Raghwan Raghwan, Desk Officer for the Asia and Pacific Region, at the Bureau for Workers’ Activities (ILO ACTRAV).

According to Mr Raghwan, many unions are now working together with informal structures. “Despite the unions being previously divided, we can see that now they are coming together in a united front. For example, in Nepal the unions are working together to see how they can assist and participate in the constitutional development of the country .And in India, unions are working together to campaign for the ratification of Conventions 87 and 98”, added Mr Raghwan.

Following the Colombo seminar, a similar event will take place in Jakarta for the East Asia Region in early December 2011.
