Kenya: Regional Seminar on the Role of Trade Unions in Rural Development and Youth Employment in Africa

NAIROBI, 12 August 2011 (ACTRAV INFO) – The Bureau for Workers' Activities (ACTRAV) held a regional seminar on “The role of Trade Unions in Rural Development and Youth Employment in Africa”.

The main objective of this seminar was to highlight the role of trade unions in organizing and promoting the employment of young women and men in rural areas of Africa. The seminar was also aimed at increasing the capacities of selected national trade union centres in economic and research handling-related issues, with a special emphasis on rural youth employment.

This seminar, chaired by Benson Okwaro, General Secretary of the Communications Workers’ Union of Kenya, was attended by 16 trade union researchers, including seven women, from eight African countries. Each of the participants made a presentation of their respective country’s papers, whilst the others acted as moderators and lead discussants.

The final country case studies are expected in mid-September 2011.
