Nepal: ILO Delegation met the Prime Minister of Nepal and the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly

KATHMANDU, 18 August 2011 (ACTRAV INFO) - An ILO delegation led by the ILO’s Regional Director for Asia–Pacific, Ms Sachiko Yamamoto and the Director of the Bureau for Workers' Activities (ACTRAV), Mr. Dan Cunniah, met the Prime Minister of Nepal, Mr. Jhala Nath Khanal, at his official residence in Baluwatar.

During this meeting, the ILO delegation and trade union leaders urged the Prime Minister to expedite the process of ratifying ILO Convention No. 87 on Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to organise (1948).

The delegation emphasized that "ILO Convention No. 87 will institutionalize the presently divided labour unions and the collective bargaining process will be more orderly". The ILO delegation also expressed its willingness to work with the Nepalese Government in taking concrete steps to increase youth employment in Nepal.

In response, the Nepalese Prime Minister underlined the commitment of his country to the ratification of ILO Conventions through the implementation of several laws to strengthen labour law in Nepal. HE Mr Jhala Nath Khanal, said that his country needs international organizations, including the ILO for its development.

Mr Cunniah, accompanied by the leaders of the three national Trade union centres of Nepal (NTUC-I, GEFONT and ANTUF), also met H.E. Mr. Subash Chandra Nembang, Chairman of the Constituent Assembly, asking for his support for the speedy ratification of ILO Convention N°87.The Chairman assured the ILO Delegation that the Assembly has already passed a resolution to this effect.Mr.Cunniah with H.E. the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly, Mr. Subash Chandra Nembang

These two meetings were part of a campaign for the ratification and implementation of ILO Conventions held in Kathmandu from 15 to 19 August 2011.
