Brussels: ITUC /PERC Meeting on "Fall-out of the Crisis: Legal and Institutional Effects of Austerity Policies”

Brussels, 15 July 2011 (ACTRAV INFO)- On 15 July 2011, the Bureau for Workers’ Activities (ACTRAV), participated in the Discussion Meeting organized by the ITUC's Pan-European Council on the subject of “Fall-out of the crisis: legal and institutional effects of austerity policies” which took place in Brussels.

Trade union leaders and representatives from Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, and Portugal shared their views on the impact of the austerity measures on workers’ rights and on unions’ responses to the crisis. Global Union Federations were also represented.

Ongoing support by the ILO for trade unions in Europe was also discussed.

Sharan Burrow, General Secretary of ITUC; Patrick Itschert, Deputy General Secretary of ETUC; and Guy Ryder, Executive Director, ILO Standards and Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work Sector addressed during the meeting.

Together with ACTRAV, representatives from ILO DIALOGUE and INTEGRATION Departments made contributions to the discussion, which were consistent with the Declaration for Social Justice of 2008, and the Global Jobs Pact.
