Press release | 08 July 2011

ROME, 4 July 2011 (ACTRAV INFO) — The Bureau for Workers' Activities (ACTRAV) took part in the sixth annual East Forum (Europe and Asia Strategies Forum) on the subject of "Competitive Growth, Jobs Policies for Quality, Solutions and Strategies for Development and Employment "

During the session, ACTRAV’s Deputy Director, Ms Anna Biondi emphasized that economic growth must be accompanied by job creation.

“If the return of growth does not go back to people (both workers and enterprises) the result will not only be economic, but social and democratic instability or failure” said Ms Biondi.

In her address, as discussant, ACTRAV’s Deputy Director reiterated the need for cohesion within the labour market, because according to her: “there is certainly tension in the labour market among young entrants and older workers, but we need to be wary of not creating a fake ‘war’ between young and old people”, commented Ms Biondi.

ACTRAV’s Deputy Director emphasized the macro-economic aspect of the labour market, taking into account several factors including the role of the social partners in the socio-economic decision making process.

"It is important not to look at the labour market as standalone but it has to be considered within the whole macro economic picture: we need to look at all policies, including tax, monetary, social protection and other necessary policies that support the ‘public good’, the role of the social partners in the socio-economic decision-making process needs to be rebuilt", explained Ms Biondi.

Finally, ACTRAV’s Deputy Director invited representatives of multinational enterprises to continue discussions based on the Tripartite Declaration of Principles concerning Multinational Enterprises and Social Policy and OECD Guidelines.

Note that this forum brought together representatives of the financial sector, international organizations and Italian political and economic leaders.
