Press release | 10 May 2011

Cotonou, 10 May 2011 (ACTRAV INFO) – The Bureau for Workers’ Activities (ACTRAV), in cooperation with the ILO’s SAFEWORK department, took part in the 7th Forum of Workplace Safety and Health Committees, held in Cotonou on 9-10 May 2011.

Initiated by the Interafrican Association for the Prevention of Occupational Risks (IAPRP), the forum’s topic was “For a dynamic Employer/Worker partnership in occupational risk management”. It also brought together experts who discussed the importance of prevention and its impact on enterprises’ productivity, together with the benefits that workers can derive from it through collective bargaining.

The ACTRAV representative told the forum that African workers had hailed the establishment of workplace safety and health committees.

“African workers have taken advantage of this seminar to salute and very warmly thank ACTRAV and SAFEWORK who, through their synergy in the field, are contributing to the establishment of Workplace Safety and Health Committees and to the training of national experts and trainers, as well as making occupational health and safety a joint concern for employers and workers,” declared Rawane Mbaye, ACTRAV’s African regional coordinator.

The forum participants proposed the establishment of a Pan-African Association of Trade Union Occupational Health and Safety Bodies.
