Singapore: 2nd ITUC Asia-Pacific Congress

Singapore, 13 May 2011 (ACTRAV INFO) – On 11-13 May 2011 in Singapore, the Bureau for Workers’ Activities took part in the second Regional Conference of the International Trade Union Confederation’s Asia-Pacific Region (ITUC-AP).

In his opening address, presenting a video message from ILO Director-General, Juan Somavia, the ACTRAV Director expressed the fear that the recent economic growth in certain Asian countries had not led to improvements in living standards and respect for workers’ rights. Dan Cunniah also emphasized that several countries in the region have not ratified all the core labour standards.

During the Congress, Sanjeeva Reddy of the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) was elected President of ITUC-AP, and Noriyuki Suzuki was re-elected as its General Secretary, for the next three years.
