Press release | 06 April 2011

Lome, 6 april 2011(ACTRAV INFO)-The ILO Bureau for Workers’ Activities took part in a training seminar for gender audit facilitators, organized from 5-6 April 2011 by ITUC-Africa.

A number of trade union organizations from French-speaking Africa were involved in the seminar, which drew up a roadmap with recommendations to the participants, the majority of whom were women.

In terms of outcomes, ITUC-Africa promised to boost gender auditing within all its affiliated trade union organizations. “There was a very strong commitment from the ITUC-Africa General Secretary, who assured the participants of his organization’s active involvement in gender auditing,” explained Rawane Mbaye, ACTRAV’s Desk Officer for Africa.

“Mr. Adu Amankwah Kwasi promised that efforts will be made to ensure that the gender dimension is built into ITUC-Africa’s decision-making and public communications”
, added Mr. Mbaye.

This Lomé seminar was part of the follow-up to resolutions adopted by the ITUC Congresses in Vienna and in Vancouver, where a strong resolution recommended that ITUC affiliates should conduct gender audits and ensure the promotion of women to key posts within their organizations.
