The 2012 World Day for Safety and Health at Work focuses on the promotion of occupational safety and health (OSH) in a green economy. The shift to a green economy is perceived as a way to reconcile the world’s economic and social needs with environmental sustainability. However, even if certain jobs are considered to be “green”, the technologies used may protect the environment but not be safe at all. In this interview, Ms Manuela Tomei, Director of the ILO Labour Protection Department (PROTRAV), looks at the less visible dimension of green jobs and the greening of traditional sectors.
Former President of Chile Michelle Bachelet presents report on Social Protection Floor to President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil

The President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, received on 15 December from the Executive Director of UN Women, Michelle Bachelet, the Portuguese version of the report "Social Protection Floor for a Fair and Inclusive Globalization". The report calls for the implementation of a social protection floor in order to stimulate economic growth and increase social cohesion in light of the economic crisis.

In Africa’s second largest slum, youth unemployment is sky high. But cooperative projects are helping youth find work and slowly lift themselves out of poverty through such projects as raising food in community gardens, processing waste for bio-fuel or providing improved sanitation. Journalist Anne Holmes reports on how this emerging economic revival is making a small but significant dent in a major ongoing challenge.

The ILO and the Global Labour University have unveiled a new anthology of global labour writing that calls for fresh thinking on key issues ranging from responses to the global economic crisis to globalization, and workers’ rights. The book - entitled “There is an alternative Economic policies and labour strategies beyond the mainstream” will be launched at the International Labour Conference in Geneva.
