Prevention through information: ILO campaign on Ukrainian railways to prevent labour exploitation among refugees

The ILO and the State Labour Inspectorate of Ukraine came through with an information campaign on Ukrainian railways that warns people on the move about situations that may lead to labour exploitation.

Magnus Berge, Senior Specialist for Workers' Organizations explains how he supports ILO work with Trade Unions in Central and Eastern Europe. He promotes Trade Unions so that they can work more effectively to improve working conditions of workers and to protect workers' rights across the region. He advises Trade Unions when their rights are violated. ILO work with Workers organizations focuses on four areas: 1) helping Trade Unions modernize their operations and structures, 2) improve their service delivery to members, 3) helping them to communicate better about laws, workers' rights and services available for them, and 4) helping to draft good policy proposals on labour laws based on International Labour Standards.

Strengthening workers’ voices – ILO trains trade union leaders and lawyers

Trade unions across Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) experience that the rights of workers are under threat and have voiced concerns over attempts to undermine organized labour. Although the region has an impressive track record of ratifications of ILO Core Conventions, the concerns over the lack of implementation of laws and lack of access to workers’ rights remain. ILO ACTRAV organized a seminar for trade union leaders and lawyers from CEE on the use of International Labour Standards and the ILO supervisory machinery in addressing deficiencies of workers’ rights on 26-28 November, 2018 in Budapest, Hungary.

Achievements and the way forward to protect the rights of migrant domestic workers

On Thursday June 23rd, representatives of Polish and Ukrainian trade unions gathered in Lviv, Ukraine for a one-day workshop organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO) to discuss achievements under the Global Action Programme on Migrant Domestic Workers and their Families (GAP-MDW) in the Ukraine-Poland migration corridor.

Rail unions focus on organising and promoting ILO conventions
