October: steady employment growth and wages up

  1. Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 161,000 in October. Jobs continued to trend up in health care (+31,000), professional and business services (+43,000), and financial activities (+14,000). The unemployment rate declined slightly to 4.9 percent.
  2.  Average hourly earnings for all private workers rose to $25.92 in October, increasing 2.8 percent over the past year, the fastest pace since June 2009.
