ILO and the Organization of American States

The ILO serves as a multilateral partner to assist implementation of the Inter-American and Summits Agendas to promote decent work, increase social and labor inclusion to reduce inequality, and expand and strengthen social protection programs for workers. The Washington Office coordinates with José Manuel Salazar Xirinachs, Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean and serves as a liaison with the OAS through participation in regular technical-level meetings and coordination efforts and contributions to the Joint Summit Working Group (JSWG).

The Summits of the Americas brings together the thirty-four democratically elected Heads of State and Governments of the Americas to review challenges that the region faces in order to seek shared solutions and improve the quality of their citizens' lives. The Summits of the Americas Process is a commitment to hemispheric integration and national and collective responsibility for improving the economic well-being and security of people.

The ILO and the IACML

The ILO actively participates in the Inter-American Conference of Ministries of Labor (IACML), which is the main forum in the Americas for discussion and decision-making regarding policy priorities and actions on labor issues. The ILO provides policy advice, technical assistance to the working groups, and strengthens coordination with the OAS technical Secretariat and other relevant members of the IACML.
