The 30th Symposium on International Labour Issues: “Future of Work and Green Jobs” (17th Oct.)

The world of work is facing an unprecedented major transformation. Towards the ILO’s centenary anniversary in 2019, the ILO has called for a global policy dialogue on the future of work in order to respond effectively to the new challenges and continue to advance its mandate for social justice.

Each year, a topic related to Japan is chosen from the agenda of the International Labour Conference, and this year the symposium discussed the “Report of the Director-General: Work in a changing climate: The Green Initiative.”

The Green Initiative, one of the seven ILO’s centenary initiatives, focuses on the just transition to a greener and low-carbon economy.  The symposium discussed how the ILO as well as Japan could contribute to a just transition to the environmentally-friendly, sustainable society and economy that also create decent work opportunities. In the first part of the symposium, ILO activities on promoting green jobs were introduced, followed by initiatives of the government, and workers’ and employers’ organizations. In the second part, experts discussed employment creation and labour issues in the areas of environment.
