The 1st Sustainability Forum~Towards 2020: Achieving Sustainable Development through Decent Work~(21st September)

[This Forum has finished.]

The International Labour Organization (ILO) is the specialized agency of the United Nations that sets international labour standards, develops policies and devises programmes promoting decent work for all women and men. Procurement policies and practices in relation to mega-sporting events such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games can be an important leverage for decent work and sustainable development.

In the preparation as well as staging of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games (Games of the XXXII Olympiad), sourcing for goods and services will become necessary at a large scale. The “Sustainable Sourcing Code” developed by Tokyo 2020 also places high importance on the need for respecting international labour standards set by the ILO. In this connection, Tokyo 2020 and ILO recently decided to partner to jointly advance decent work in the Games’ sourcing process, through engagement with the Games’ delivery partners for an effective roll-out of the Code.

This Sustainability Forum organized by the ILO and supported by Tokyo 2020 therefore aims at raising awareness amongst the Games’ stakeholders on the international labour standards and their principles, especially how they relate to business policies and practices.

The Forum will provide information on sustainable sourcing, international labour standards and principles, as well as business opportunities and risks. The ILO will present practical examples of socially responsible labour practices. Tokyo 2020 will provide guidance for operationalizing the Sustainable Sourcing Code. With the participation of the Games’ delivery partner companies, the panel will discuss the roles of business as well as the labour-related risks arising from the sourcing process. Good practices will also be shared as inputs into the interactive discussion.

Save the date and join the discussion on 21 September!
