Labour market governance and working conditions

Reliable, timely labour statistics and labour market information and analysis (LMIA) are critical for governments, and employers’ and workers’ organizations to design, implement, and monitor and evaluate national, regional and local policies and programmes to address the opportunities and challenges nationally and regionally. The ILO tripartite constituents have identified the critical need for labour statistics and LMIA, which has been incorporated into the Decent Work Country Programmes (DWCPs) of all ILO member States of Pacific Island Countries and the Pacific Action Plan for Decent Work (PAPDW).

This builds on initiatives to develop analytical tools to assess the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals and Target 1B: “full and productive employment and decent work for all, inclusive of women and young people and Cairns Compact on Strengthening Development Coordination in the Pacific which reiterates the Pacific Leaders’ commitment in the 2005 Pacific Plan to improve “Forum Island countries’ development data to guide better decision-making.”
