The ILO Workshop on Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, is held on 27-29 October 2010.

The workshop brings together seafarers, ship owners and government labour and maritime officers from Fiji, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu and Vanuatu to promote the ratification and implementation of the MLC Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 in the Pacific.

This DWCP details the policies, strategies and results required to realise progress towards decent work for all. It reflects the strategic planning of ILO cooperation activities with Kiribati for the period 2009 – 2012, in alignment with the UNDAF. Reflecting the constituents’ as well as the ILO experts’ assessment of past cooperation the programme aims at ensuring a strong coherence of ILO activities in Kiribati and thus to contribute to the achievement of sustainable impacts.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the Establishment of the Tripartite Labour Advisory Council was drafted. It was signed by all tripartite constituents at a workshop and signed copies distributed to the parties.

The adoption of the Port Vila Statement and Pacific Action Plan reflects a commitment by tripartite constituents to support a jobs-led recovery from the global economic crisis, by promoting Decent Work in the Pacific region.

The proposed programme addresses issues of International Labour Standards and decent work promotion, as well as protection for maritime workers. It builds on past ILO projects to promote ILS ratification and implementation and specifically builds on the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) gap analyses recently carried out. It also seeks to implement the ILO report on establishment of a regional seafarers' identity documents (SIDs) issuance system.

The development objective of this project is for labour legislation and policy at a national and regional level, to promote good labour market governance and effectively implement Core and Governance International Labour Standards.
