A meeting of the JMC’s Subcommittee on Wages of Seafarers was held in Geneva on 12-13 February 2009. The agenda consisted of a single item: The Seafarers' Wages, Hours of Work and the Manning of Ships Recommendation, 1996 (No. 187): The updating of the basic wage of able seafarers.

The Subcommittee could not agree on a new wage figure. The Office consulted the Secretariats of the Shipowners' and Seafarers' groups with a view to convening another meeting of the Subcommittee. The wage figure to be applied remained at US$545, which became effective on 31 December 2008.
