This paper gives an overview of some of the challenges for accident and ill health prevention in the sector, both in the light of the more open labour and trade markets and increased regulation, and how several countries are tacking these challenges. It also refers to some wider issues, including the need for a management systems approach to safety and health and the recently adopted Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health Convention and Recommendation, and makes some recommendations for improvements in the sector.
