  1. ISSA report on the extension of social security coverage in the BRICS

    The International Social Security Association has launched the report Social security coverage extension in the BRICS: A comparative study on the extension of coverage in Brazil, the Russian Federation, India, China and South Africa. ISSA's report highlights the diverse approaches of the BRICS to the challenges each country faces in respect of extending social security coverage. They show how responses take into account the local realities and environment in each country.

  4. South-South exchange Sub-regional Workshop on strategies for universal health coverage, 20th-22nd February 2013, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso

    Between 20th and 22nd February, as part of an on-going ILO South-South cooperation project, line ministers from Burkina Faso, Benin, Togo, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali and Senegal will participate in a sub-regional conference on strategies to promote and extend universal health coverage. The conference is co-hosted by the World Health Organization, and will provide an opportunity for government representatives, who are currently developing strategies to extend health coverage as part of establishing social protection floors, to learn from the experiences of two other countries in the South: India and Thailand.

  5. Master of Management in the field of Social Security

    For potential students working or interested in post-graduate studies specialising in the field of Social Security, the Graduate School of Public and Development Management (P&DM) at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesbourg, South Africa, together with the International Labour Office now offers a comprehensive master’s degree focused entirely on the competencies required for policy-makers, researchers, and managers. This degree was initiated for the first time in 2012 and is the most advanced of its kind offered in Africa.

    The International Social Security Association has launched the newsletter Social Security Observer n° 19 - December 2012. It highlights a review of Argentina's pension system reform, pointing out the measures implemented to takle the problems concerning financial sustainability, coverage and the adequacy of benefits.

  2. Social Health Protection: addressing inequities in access to health care

    This course is organized by the International Training Centre of the ILO. Held in English and French (simultaneous interpretation provided) the course will identify inequities in effective access and main causes, review the importance of universal access to health care in crisis and post crisis situations, issues related to the feasibility of introducing a scheme and planning for implementation; designing the appropriate contribution levels and benefi ts, monitoring the provision of services and ensuring the sound governance and financing of the scheme.

  4. Master in Occupational Safety and Health

    The general objective of the course is to facilitate the knowledge and skills required for dealing effectively with safety and health management in the enterprise. The course has been specifically designed for hygienists, physicians, chemists, engineers, inspectors, practitioners and civil servants with a university degree but without previous specialization in OSH, who are working, or wish to work, as OSH specialists.

Held in English, it will focus on increasing awareness of the Domestic Workers Convention, 2011 (Nº 189) and the Domestic Workers Recommendation, 2011 (Nº 201), to strengthen the broad protection of vulnerable groups such as migrant domestic workers and victims of child domestic labour. Exchange of good practices will be encouraged.
