Cost of Social Security 1990-96

The data published are provided to the ILO by the national governmental institutions (Ministries of Labour, Social Affairs, Social Security Institutions etc.). Not all respondents to our questionnaire were able to provide all the data required. Thus, data for some countries cover only part of all the social security schemes existing in the country. Furthermore, not all financing sources were always identified.

The above particularly concerns answers to the 1997 questionnaire, covering the period 1994-1996. This Inquiry attempted to compile data on overall public social protection expenditure and financing, with the scope significantly extended compared to previous Inquiries. Apart from financial data, the Inquiry also aimed at collecting information on coverage: numbers of protected persons, beneficiaries and contributors. Some national institutions had difficulty collecting and providing much of these data, and some of the replies received cover only some of the existing social protection schemes.

The data should therefore be used with caution, in consultation with the notes and methodological information provided. Data published here include only expenditure and revenue items.

The data tables and accompanying footnotes and methodological information have been published in English, French or Spanish, depending on the official language of the country concerned.
