Tackling Bonded Labour in Tamil Nadu

In India's Tamil Nadu state, thousands of people desperate for money are offered advance payments to work in the region's many brick kilns. While this system has worked well enough in the past for both employers and workers, many workers run the risk of "debt bondage" because they cannot leave the worksite until they repay the advance in full. But the situation is changing now, by ILO working with government and employers, and showing workers how they can take more control of their own lives.

21 million trapped in modern slavery

Modern slavery, forced labour, still traps more than 20 million people around the world in different forms including debt bondage, forced begging, or trafficking. According to Beate Andrees, Head of the ILO's Special Action Programme to Combat Forced Labour, one of the main problems in the fight against modern slavery is how to identify victims of this crime. The ILO plays a key role in training institutions to take legislative action that enable societies to implement and enforce laws that make modern slavery a crime.

Nearly 21 million workers are trapped in forced labour, the ILO warns

Governments, business leaders and trade unions around the world are being urged by the International Labour Organization to take urgent action to stop forced labour. In its latest report, the ILO says that nearly 21 million people are victims of forced labour. The agency is warning that the number may increase during the current global economic crisis. ILO Radio interviewed with Beate Andrees, Head of the ILO's Special Action Programme to Combat Forced Labour.

ILO Reports Shocking Figures on Forced Labour

What they find there is sometimes not what they expected.
