ILO and CONASSAT Uruguay to launch campaign on occupational safety and health for young workers

Montevideo, Uruguay - With the objective of publicizing the importance of prevention in matters of safety and health at work, particularly related to young workers, representatives of the ILO Office for the Southern Cone of Latin America and of the National Health and Safety at Work Council of Uruguay (CONASSAT), met on Tuesday, September 26 at the ILO / CINTERFOR headquarters to discuss guidelines for a communications campaign on this topic.

The initiative is part of [regional] activities to be carried out under the ILO SafeYouth@Work Project - Building a generation of safe and healthy workers, funded by the US Department of Labor, and which includes, among others, research on occupational risks for young workers, the mainstreaming of OSH content in technical/professional training programs, and the training of labour inspectors.

On behalf of the ILO, Southern Cone Specialist in Health and Safety at Work, Carmen Bueno, and Communications Officer, Sonia Alvarez, met with CONASSAT members to discuss guidelines for the National Safety and Health at Work Campaign which focuses on young workers, and the key elements to ensure tripartite engagement in the initiative.

CONASSAT is a tripartite body established in 2015 with participation from the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, and the Ministry of Public Health as well as the State Insurance Bank, the Social Security Bank,
representatives from the Chamber of Commerce, and the PIT-CNT.

The strong tradition of social dialogue on OSH in Uruguay, represented by this tripartite body, has been highlighted by the ILO as a benchmark in the region.
