This case study of sewage workers in India paints a disturbing picture of untolerable working conditions, infectious diseases, and uninterested employers. The AITUC undertook this study with the aims of completing a detailed inspection of the nature of their work, working procedure, and working conditions, identifying the health and safety problems of sewage workers, and increasing awareness about how hazaradous conditions could be affecting and spoiling the lives of the workers. In their research, AITUC found that the job of being a sewage worker can pose great danger to a persons general well-being. They discovered that little or no effort has been put into decreasing the risks to workers which have had adverse impacts on their health and have also resulted in early and unnatural deaths in some cases. AITUC made a list of recommendations for the industry which they are pushing to have implemented as soon as possible.
