This case study examines how a collective agreement was reached between management of the San Miguel Corporation (SMC) and its union with regards to environmental policy at the workplace. Realizing that many environmental problems arise at work and that both workers and industry must take leadership to make sustainable development a priority, the TUCP chose the collective bargaining process to bind both the company and labour to the process of establishing environmental policies. The SMC experience showed how collective bargaining provides a logical starting point for labour-management cooperation on environmental action because it is an established mechanism recognized by all actors in the workplace. The case study also outlines the company's Corporate Policy on the Environment and how it successfully reflects Agenda 21 objectives.
