This case study reported on the work of the Institute for Plantation, Agricultural, and Rural Workers (IPARW) efforts to address the problems that workers on tea plantations face, including inadequate housing, sanitation, water supply, and harsh exposure to polluting chemicals. A voluntary social welfare organisation, IPARW aimed to create awareness to improve the socio-economic conditions of the workers, to extend health care services, to promote literacy, and to generate awareness about child labour. Through the involvement of IPARW, tea workers and their families in the region are now served by a mobile x-ray and pathology clinic and community health volunteers, they have vocational training for dependants and unemployed workers, cultural and sports programmes, and financial services. There has also been new interest in OSHE activities, increased education on pesticide issues, and increased adoption of safety measures, including hazardous substance control and personal hygiene awareness. This successful IPARW programme has inspired plans for more activities and an expansion of services to other tea plantations.
