Chile has seen a dramatic increase in mining activities in the past few years, bringing about investments and technological changes. Some of these changes, however, have had damaging effects on workers and the environment. Because these two groups are now experiencing the adverse impacts of industrial progress, ICEM and their affiliate, the Miners' Confederation of Chile, began a research programme on mine workers in the Copiapo Region. Through the involvement of local doctors and laboratory analysts, they were able to identify mercury contamination in the environment and extremely high levels of mercury in the urine of the mine workers (up to 50 times higher than is acceptable in Chile). Through the project, the MCC has been able to train union representatives in environmental issues, increase union membership, arouse the interest of several local unions to work on environmental issues, and to develop good relations with the nearby university and the authorities.
