A major centre of chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and petro-chemical units in India, the Baroda-Ankleshwar industrial belt is home to numerous polluting industries. The aims of this case study were to raise trade union awareness towards health problems of workers due to exposure to toxics, to alert them to dangers to the community and the environment from toxic releases by industry, and to help formulate the role of trade unions in environmental protection. This study is one of many which have collected first hand information on what the existing state of affairs is in Indian industries in regards to environmental protection, including workers' health. The case study highlights the types of waste produced in the Baroda-Ankleshwar industrial belt, the methods of disposal, the efforts of management in regards to pollution control, and the role of trade unions in regards to environmental and worker safety.
