| This ACTRAV project on Trade Unions and Environmentally
Sustainable Development is due to finish at the end of the year 2000. Until that time, a
few final activities are taking place and we are building on the great successes of the
Project, as well as tying up loose ends. The Project has just published a booklet of case study summaries called "Trade Union Actions to Promote Environmentally Sustainable Development." Before the end of the year we hope to have the booklet translated and printed in French and Spanish, too. The Project's two main training booklets ("Using ILO Standards to Promote Environmentally Sustainable Development" and "Trade Unions and Environmentally Sustainable Development", both originally published in 1996) have recently been translated into French, Spanish, and Russian, and we will soon be distributing those globally. Additionally, we are beginning the translation of the booklets into Arabic. For those of you who are technologically inclined, we have produced a CD-rom which contains the two training booklets, which will soon be available in French and Spanish as well as English. In terms of remaining activities, we have a few things planned before the end of the year, including:
We will finish off the year with two regional workshops for the Project's focal points in Africa and Asia where we hope to discuss the future involvement of trade unions with issues of environmental sustainability. Thank you to all of the committed trade unionists around the globe whose efforts made the accomplishments of this project possible. Please note: The CTA of the Project has been named Focal Point for the Environment within ACTRAV. This illustrates ACTRAV's commitment to keep environmental issues active in workers' training programmes even after this project has finished. Additionally, ACTRAV will continue to aim to influence environmental policy development and its implementation from the workers' perspective. |
