The Court of Justice of the EC is responsible for ensuring
that the interpretation and application of Community law is
observed. Its jurisdiction covers civil matters including
trade, anti-trust, individual rights, and environmental
law. Since Community law supersedes national law, when
conflicts arise the Court has the power to override laws of
individual member States. (1997)
