Since the project on Trade Unions and Environmentally
Sustainable Development began in 1990, much change has taken place. Recognition and
acceptance of environmentally sustainable development as a trade union issue is on the
rise. Trade unions are starting to formulate and implement environmental and sustainable
development policies at the national level. Also, trade unions are networking between one
another and forming alliances on environmental issues. Through the Project, fifty-six
workshops have been held throughout Africa and Asia since 1994, training over 2600 members
how to develop trade union policies and action plans in their workplace and community. Dozens of case studies have been developed which show how environmentally sustainable development issues have been integrated into trade union work on a practical level, covering issues such as occupational health and safety, the transportation of hazardous cargo, water pollution control, and the changing climates impact on employment. The variety of the subjects studied shows that environmental issues are coming to the forefront at workplaces around the world, thanks to dedicated trade union members and the knowledge this Project has helped spread. You will find information about the Project, its materials (produced in many languages), case studies, cooperative partners, networks, background information and the like on this web page. There is no copyright on this material to allow its fullest use in part or as a whole. Please use this information to inform, educate, and motivate workers in your area to assert their rights to a safe, healthy, and sustainable future.
