In adopting the goal of Decent Work, the international community made a commitment to securing productive work for women and men everywhere. This is a widespread need shared by people, families and communities in every society, and at all levels of development. Decent Work means adequate income, safeguarding of rights and assured social protection.
The goal is not simply the creation of jobs, but the creation of jobs of acceptable quality. The need today is to devise social and economic systems which ensure basic security and employment while still able to adapt to rapidly changing conditions in a highly competitive global market.
