How the ILO Thesaurus evolved

The ILO Thesaurus derives from a list of some 1200 keywords suggested by ILO researchers in 1964, following the decision to computerize information storage and retrieval in the ILO Library. Soon after, the ILO Library joined forces with an OECD working group to produce an Aligned list of descriptors, the first controlled vocabulary for indexing documents in the field of economic and social development. This later became the OECD Macrothesaurus which the ILO Library used for indexing and retrieving information until the first edition of the ILO Thesaurus was published in 1976.

The ILO Thesaurus is regularly updated to meet the ILO's specific terminology needs. Potential new terms are monitored to see how their use develops in the literature and discussions are held with indexers and subject specialists to decide on their inclusion in the ILO Thesaurus.
