"Knowledge sharing...[is] the transfer and communication of knowledge...[it] is connecting people with the knowledge they need – rather than collecting and compiling documents." (ILO: Results-based management: (b) knowledge strategy, Governing Body, 300th Session, Geneva, Nov. 2007, GB.300/PFA/9/2, p. 1-2) (pdf 101 KB)
"Knowledge sharing is as much a state of mind and way of behaving as it is a technique or skill." (ILO. 2006. I went to a knowledge sharing workshop and all I got was this guidebook (ILO, Geneva), p. 7)

Many analysts have identified knowledge as a strategic factor in providing institutions and organizations with the ability to maximize their research, innovative, and productive capabilities in order to achieve a competitive advantage in the global knowledge economy. The recognition of knowledge as a critical success factor in "maintain[ing] its status as a leading knowledge institution in the world of work and influenc[ing] global and national policy debates" led the ILO to "invest in strategies on knowledge management and knowledge sharing." (ILO: Strategic Policy Framework (2006-09) (and preview of the Programme and Budget proposals for 2006-07), Governing Body, 291st Session, Geneva, Nov. 2004, GB.291/PFA/9, p. 14) (pdf 200 KB).
This website provides an introduction to Knowledge Sharing with an emphasis on the needs and activities of the ILO. You will find here the ILO's Knowledge Strategy, an inventory of ILO activities, and selected policies from other international organizations. Most importantly, you will find a Knowledge Sharing Toolkit which presents key knowledge sharing concepts and methods which are set out so that you can identify what methods are useful for what purpose or in what contexts.
