The role of FACILITIES

  • Implementation of the headquarters renovation project ;
  • greening of ILO facilities worlwide, in particular with respect to waste management and energy use; - (pdf 295Kb)
  • policy development and implementation concerning the acquisition, leasing, construction, use and maintenance of all ILO premises, including external offices ;
  • property management at headquarters and external offices, including in particular the execution of any structural adaptations necessary to ensure compliance with UN and local security and safety and health requirements ;
  • development and implementation of a policy for the rational and efficient allocation and use of office space, meeting rooms and furniture ;
  • day-to-day facilities management at headquarters, including cleaning, allocation of furniture ;
  • maintenance of the headquarters building, grounds and fixtures ;
  • central receiving and recording of fixed assets ;
  • maintaining an accurate and up to date inventory at headquarters and external offices ;
  • providing a "one-stop" service for all questions related to facilities management.

The technical support services provided by the Department of Facilities Management at headquarters and in the regions are critical to the well-being of staff, to efficiency and productivity as well as to the overall image of the Organization, particularly vis-à-vis ILO constituents and member States. Therefore the Department as a responsibility to ensure that all ILO office accommodation, meetings rooms, goods and facilities under its mandate, are properly maintained and efficiently organized. The Department has responsibility for devoping and implementing initiatives aimed at "greening" the ILO worlwide in line with best practices in the UN system and elsewhere.

Maintenance operations are performed by internal technical workshop staff. Some work is entrusted to outside firms.

FACILITIES workshops:

  • technical assistance for maintenance and renovation
  • air conditioning: heating-ventilation and plumbing
  • electrical
  • gardening: planting and maintenance
  • carpentry: furniture and furnishings
  • hardware: building and equipment
  • telecommunications infrastructure and cabling

FACILITIES also supervises the renovation and construction of ILO field offices.
