ELEVENTH ITEM ON THE AGENDA

Other financial and general questions

Additional funds for the Working Party on the
Evaluation of the Active Partnership Policy

1. At its 268th Session (March 1997), the Governing Body decided to establish a Tripartite Working Party to conduct an evaluation of the Active Partnership Policy. The funding for this evaluation, originally estimated at $140,000 during 1997 and $15,000 during 1998, was approved by the Governing Body at the same session.

2. The Working Party has proposed to meet for three days in January 1998, rather than immediately prior to the Governing Body session in March 1998 as originally planned. A meeting in January 1998 would provide an opportunity to solicit appropriate feedback on conclusions and recommendations contained in the final draft of the evaluation report, as well as to meet the deadlines for publication. The cost of this meeting would amount to some $35,000, rather than the previously estimated $15,000, due to the additional travel costs.

3. The Committee may wish to recommend to the Governing Body that the additional costs in 1998-99, estimated at $20,000, be financed in the first instance from savings in Part I of the budget, on the understanding that, should this subsequently prove impossible, the Director-General would propose alternative methods of financing at a later stage in the biennium.

Geneva, 18 November 1997.
