Abstract
PRO-169 project has supported, to date, three seminars in Morocco, in association with Tamaynut - an Amazigh organization. The first was held in Rabat, in 1998, and the second in Bouznihka in 2000. The last seminar, which took place in January 2000, developed a number of recommendations as to how the rights of indigenous and tribal peoples here could be further promoted and respected.
Recent positive developments in Morocco, following the workshops, include the official recognition of the Amazigh language (Tamazight), and the creation of a Royal Institute for Amazigh Culture. In recognition of these positive developments, PRO-169 project supported a national workshop on the rights of indigenous peoples in Morocco in November 2003. This workshop addressed three priority themes identified by indigenous peoples: consultation and participation; land and resource rights; and the right to education and identity.
Project support to this process continues with a 12-month project on customary law and indigenous rights that aims to follow-up the recommendations of the 2003 workshop.
